Dear Wendy,

Thank you for your email to the Australian War Memorial regarding the diary that you have in your possession. I have forwarded it to our curators of Private Records, who advise that it does look like other diaries we have in our collection in terms of the writing style but it is difficult to be certain of the authenticity; if you wish to get it appraised you might try taking it to a valuer who might be able to offer advice. It is difficult to tell if the diary would have been written at the time or after the war from his recollections.

Our curators were unaware of the precise poem existing elsewhere in our collection, but as our collection includes both volumes of published poetry and poems such as this inserted in private records, it is difficult to be entirely certain. For similar poetry, you may like to investigate Bert Beros’ poetry, which has been published in a volume called The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel and Other Verses. We have over 100 items in our books collection that are catalogued as Second World War poetry, so there has certainly been a variety of verse from the time published.

If you would like information about researching Second World War service, there is detailed information available in the Research Centre’s information  sheets here: http://www.awm.gov.au/research/infosheets.

I hope this information is of assistance. Please feel free to contact us again with any further queries.

Yours sincerely,
